If you have a sump pump, please check to make sure that it pumps to the outside of your home. By city ordinance, you are not allowed to pump water from your sump pump to the basement floor drain or sink. Water pumped to the house drains flows into the sanitary sewer system, this water can overload the sewer system causing sewer backups in your home and in your neighborhood. During heavy rain events, one sump pump can discharge up to 10,000 gallons of water per day. Not only can sump pumps discharging to the sanitary sewer system cause sewer backups but the wastewater treatment plant has to treat that water increasing costs for all the utility rate payers. Please help keep costs down by correctly discharging your sump pump.
